Just Enough Items (JEI)
Searches item recipes and uses, with version-specific server requirements.
Just Enough Items, usually called JEI, lets you search items, view their recipes and check what an ingredient can make. In the default controls, hover over an item and press R for recipes or U for uses. Multiplayer installation requirements depend on your Minecraft version.

JEI becomes especially useful when you recognize an ingredient but have no idea what to do with it. Instead of opening a browser for every new metal or crop, follow its uses in the inventory screen. That also makes it easier to understand the mods already installed in a pack.
Choose a JEI file that matches both Minecraft and your loader. The author documents an important difference between releases:
| Minecraft version | What to check in multiplayer |
|---|---|
| 1.21.1 and earlier | JEI can work on the client alone, but some features, including the recipe-transfer button, are unavailable without server support. |
| 1.21.2 and later | Recipes are stored on the server. JEI needs an appropriate server-side installation to synchronize them; verify support for the server’s loader and version. |
This is why “JEI is always client-only” is an incomplete installation answer. If you join a server you do not manage, ask what it supports before assuming that adding the client JAR will provide every recipe feature.
Open your inventory and use JEI’s search field. Search for an item you want to make, hover over it and press R. Then inspect an ingredient you are missing. Pressing U on that ingredient answers the opposite question: what else could you spend it on?
For a crowded mod list, try @create to narrow the search to Create. The @ prefix searches by mod name. Recipe categories may show crafting, cooking or a machine process when the installed mod provides that integration.
The recipe-transfer button can fill a supported crafting interface using materials you already have. It does not create missing ingredients. If the button is unavailable, check the installation requirements above and whether that particular machine interface supports transfer.
If the item list disappears, try Ctrl+O, the default overlay toggle. If that does nothing, look for conflicting JEI key bindings in Minecraft’s controls.
For one missing recipe, first confirm that the content mod is installed and that the recipe exists in this pack. Packs can change or remove recipes, and not every custom machine exposes its recipes to JEI. Reinstalling the viewer cannot restore a recipe the pack intentionally removed.
Its normal recipe browsing does not give you free items. Item-spawning functions are separate and depend on the relevant settings and permissions. You can use the viewer to plan ordinary survival crafting.
Create recommends JEI for its recipes. Use JEI to find the ingredients and process, then use Create’s Ponder scenes to understand the physical machine layout. The Create beginner guide combines those two steps.
The server may have different recipes, mods or synchronization support. Check the server’s pack version and JEI requirements before treating your local recipe list as authoritative.
For an overlay that names the block or creature you are looking at, use Jade. JEI is most useful once you know which item you want to investigate.
Once you know which ingredients you need, Mouse Tweaks can make moving them between inventories quicker.
