How ModGenie finds mods
ModGenie takes a sentence about the gameplay you want and returns mods that actually exist. This page covers where the data comes from, how the matching works, and where the limits are.
Which games and sources are covered
Mod data comes from Thunderstore. 32 games are searchable today, and the catalog is rechecked every night, so download counts, version numbers and last-updated dates match what you'd see on the source page. Four games also have written guides and topic pages on this site; the rest are search-only.
How a description becomes a list of mods
Write the outcome you want, not keywords. “I keep losing my stuff when I die” carries more usable information than “death”, because it says what should change rather than which word an author might have typed.
Ask for several things in one sentence and you get several groups of results. Each wish is answered separately, so a four-part request doesn't collapse into one vague list.
Every mod shown is checked against the live catalog before it reaches you. If a name can't be matched to a real package for the game you picked, it isn't shown — you will not get a plausible-sounding mod that doesn't exist.
How to read the maintenance labels
For every game: mods the author has marked as deprecated are labelled before you install them, and results point you to an active alternative where one exists.
For Valheim there is more to go on. Results are compared against Valheim's own patch timeline, so a mod can also be flagged as possibly outdated or likely abandoned based on whether it has been touched since the last major update. Other games don't have that timeline yet, so treat an unflagged mod there as “not deprecated” rather than “confirmed current”, and check the last-updated date on the card.
Finder, manager, maker — which is which
- Mod finder
- What this site is. It helps you decide which mods to install, and stops there.
- Mod manager
- Software like r2modman, Gale or the Thunderstore app. It downloads, installs and version-locks the mods you chose.
- Mod maker
- Tooling for authoring a mod yourself. ModGenie doesn't do this and doesn't host any files.
Installing what you found
Every result links to its page on the source repository, which any mod manager can install from. Valheim goes one step further: pick the mods you want and ModGenie generates a modpack code with the mods, their dependencies and their in-game settings already filled in, which a manager imports in one step. That shortcut is Valheim-only for now.
