How can I use Terralith in a new Minecraft world?

Short answer

Add Terralith before creating a new Minecraft Java Edition world. Choose its mod or data-pack form for your game version and follow that form’s requirements. From Terralith 2.6.0, the mod requires Lithostitched, and the author advises against swapping between the mod and data-pack forms.

Terralith

Starmute

Expands terrain and biomes using vanilla blocks; plan the world setup first.

On this page

Terralith is worth considering when you want the journey between destinations to feel different: more varied biomes, cliffs, valleys and caves built with vanilla blocks. World generation is a decision to make before settling into a long-term save, so a disposable preview world is a useful first step.

Choose one installation form

Your setupWhere to start
An existing Fabric, Forge or NeoForge instanceCheck whether Terralith publishes a mod file for that exact loader and Minecraft version. Install its declared dependencies, including Lithostitched where required.
A Java world using data packsChoose the matching data-pack release and enable it for the world before generation. A data-pack installation does not itself require a mod loader.

Both routes have release-specific requirements. Do not install both forms together, and do not assume their internals are interchangeable just because they create similar terrain.

Create a preview world before your main save

For the mod route, install the correct JARs in the instance, launch it and create a fresh world after checking the relevant world-generation settings.

For the data-pack route, open Data Packs in the new-world creation screen. Open the pack folder, add the downloaded pack and move it into the selected list before creating the world. Follow the release’s packaging instructions and any compatibility messages from Minecraft. Stop and verify a mismatch rather than forcing a pack for another game version.

Give the preview world an obvious name and explore enough terrain to see whether you like the result. Creative mode can make this quick. Check a few different areas instead of judging the whole setup from one spawn point. Once satisfied, create the world you intend to keep with the same chosen configuration.

Why an old world needs a different decision

The author recommends starting a new world rather than adding Terralith to an existing one, and explicitly warns that it cannot simply be removed from an existing save. Using vanilla blocks does not make the world-generation data disposable.

An existing region will not be rewritten just because you enable a generator. Treat a backup as a recovery copy, not proof that changing a long-running world is a routine upgrade. If keeping the old save intact is your priority, keep playing it separately and use Terralith for a new world.

Common questions

Does Terralith add new building blocks?

Its terrain uses vanilla blocks. The variety comes from how it generates biomes, terrain and related features. That still involves world-generation definitions your save may depend on.

Does every player need to install a mod for the data-pack route?

A world’s data pack is handled by the server, including the integrated server in single-player. Players do not need a mod loader merely because that world uses a data pack. For the mod route, check the selected release’s client, server and dependency requirements separately.

Can I combine it with another biome generator?

Check the exact combination and installation form in the authors’ documentation. Terralith distinguishes compatibility with biome mods from compatibility with biome data packs. Test a new world before committing to a long-term configuration.

Can I switch from the data pack to the mod later?

Do not treat that as a routine file swap. From version 2.6.0, the author states that the forms differ and warns that switching can damage a world. Keep the chosen form unless there is specific supported migration guidance for your releases.

Plan the exploration setup around the world

Add a minimap and waypoints if you want help returning to places you find. For low rendering performance, see the Sodium guide; it does not replace world-generation planning.

You can return to the Minecraft mod overview, or search Minecraft mods on ModGenie with your version, loader and whether you are creating a new world.
