How can I add a minimap and waypoints to Minecraft?

Short answer

Xaero’s Minimap adds a corner map and saved waypoints to Minecraft Java Edition. Install the release for your game version and loader, then use the default B key to mark a location. On a multiplayer server, check its map and radar rules before choosing an edition.

Xaero's Minimap

Adds a minimap and personal waypoints, with editions for different feature needs.

A useful first waypoint is simply “Home.” Mark it before leaving on a long trip, and you can spend more attention exploring instead of trying to remember which river led back to your base. Villages, cave entrances and shared meeting places are good candidates after that.

Set up a map you can read while playing

Install the mod in the client instance you use. The main map and waypoint features are client-side; a server installation is optional for additional features such as world identification.

  1. Enter a world and press Y to open the minimap settings.
  2. Choose a size and corner that do not cover other HUD elements.
  3. Stand at your base and press B to create a named waypoint.
  4. Use U to open the waypoint list and check that the marker belongs to the expected world and dimension.

These are default bindings. If a key opens another mod’s menu, change the conflict in Minecraft’s controls. Start with a few clearly named markers; a screen full of unnamed points is harder to navigate than a small useful set.

Choose features the server allows

The full edition includes entity radar and cave maps. The author also offers a Fair-play edition without those two features. That can be useful for servers that restrict additional information, but its name is not a guarantee that a particular server permits it.

Waypoints also do not grant teleport permission. A teleport action relies on a server command and the permissions attached to it. You can use a waypoint as a navigation marker even when teleporting is unavailable.

When your markers appear to be missing

Open the waypoint list before creating replacements. Check the selected world, server address, sub-world and dimension. The author documents cases where an address change or incorrect sub-world selection makes an existing set seem to disappear.

If you use the separate Xaero’s World Map, also check its world selection. The minimap is not the same product as a full-screen map, and adding one does not mean the other is installed.

Common questions

Do I need to start a new world?

No. A minimap and your waypoint collection can be used while continuing an existing world. Mark places as you visit them; installing a map does not give you a complete record of every unexplored area.

Can my friends see the waypoints I create?

Do not assume a personal waypoint automatically appears for everyone. Use a supported sharing method or send the coordinates, then have your friends confirm the location and dimension in their own setup.

Why is teleporting disabled?

Your world or server may not allow the required command, or the configured command may not match the server. A map marker does not bypass those restrictions. Ask the server owner if teleportation is intended to be available.

Is the Fair-play edition always allowed in multiplayer?

No. It removes entity radar and cave maps, but servers can have stricter rules about maps or waypoints. Read the server’s own policy before joining with it.

Make exploration easier to follow

For identifying unfamiliar things along the way, see Jade’s block and entity overlay. If you are planning a fresh exploration world, read the Terralith setup guide. Both are included in the Minecraft mod overview.

To find a map for a particular environment, search Minecraft mods on ModGenie with your version, loader and the features your server permits.
