Skill Recovery Journal
Write skills into a journal first, then read them back on a new character.
You can keep practiced skills without keeping the character. Skill Recovery Journal records skills in a craftable journal that a new character can read. Keep Skill Level keeps the levels instead of asking you to write them down first. Neither one leaves your bag on the body.
Write skills into a journal first, then read them back on a new character.
Keeps skill levels instead of asking you to write them down first.
The journal only helps if you wrote in it and the next character can reach it. Players have reported recipe problems with the journal; treat that as a reported issue, not as proof that every recipe fails. Keep Skill Level is the other experience: the levels stay without that chore.
| Option | What survives | What does not | How it feels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skill Recovery Journal | Skills and recipes you already wrote down | Gear, and anything you forgot to record | You still die. The journal is a recovery plan, not a respawn. |
| Keep Skill Level | Skill levels, without a journal step | A guarantee that recipes, map progress, and gear come along | The listing covers B41 and B42. Check the page for your exact build. |
Death that only drops worn items is a different sandbox question. Do not install a skill mod to solve a loot-drop rule.
Make one test character, record or die once, and confirm the next character actually has the skills you expected. On a shared save, agree whether the journal is a base object everyone can read. This page has not been run on a dedicated server.
The Build 42 overview uses the journal, and it says the same thing: write it down, and do not expect your pack to stay. If you also care about books you have already read, say that in the search box. That is not what these two items promise.
No. It records skills and recipes you wrote down. Your gear stays where you died unless some other rule moves it.
Then there is nothing to read back. Keep Skill Level is the option that does not depend on that habit.
The journal is meant to record recipes as well as skills. Players have reported recipe problems, so check one known recipe after you read the journal.
No. Both items belong on this page. Use the Workshop page for the build you play, instead of a second article that repeats the same choice.
